Friday, Jan. 18, 2002 -- 1:35 p.m. Why don't we eat dogs, cats, bugs, humans, and other such taboo culinary delights? If it has some nutritional value and it doesn't poison us than why don't we eat it? I read somewhere that bugs are very high in protein. In some places in the world, people drink urine, they believe it has health benefits. I think that it is mainly grounded in tradition and religion that we eat some things and don't eat other things. So we get used to the taste of beef or chicken or pork or whatever and other things are foreign to our palattes. It is not "natural" to eat cow, pig, chicken, and seafood. It is not "unnatural" to eat dog, cat, worms, monkeys and rhinos. Food choices are very culture specific. In other countries, people do eat dogs and monkeys and other such foods that the western world considers abhorrent. However, I think this "acceptable foods, inacceptable foods" list can change with time. Take sushi for example. Sushi is becoming more and more an acceptable food choice as we learn to be more open-minded and reject our ignorance of other cultures. My love encompasses all varieties of food (though I do not like eating liver and kidneys). I love Chinese food in all its greasy splendor, and I love japanese food in all its bitesized wonder. haha, argh. I love Italian food, thai food, vietnemese food, I like southern food (Is KFC southern food?), I love Korean food. I am not prejudiced in my food choices, (I'm not a very picky eater.) |
